Many of the best site-sensitive homes are almost imperceptible in the landscape. Mumbai-based Architecture Brio completed one such dwelling with the Riparian House, a half-embedded holiday home that blends into its lush riverside landscape with a green roof. Located within the beautiful UNESCO-protected Western Ghats in Karjat near Mumbai, the Riparian House celebrates the landscape with its muted and complementary design.
Built as a weekend retreat, the 330-square-meter Riparian House sits on the banks of the River Ulhas. The green-roofed home is nearly undetectable from the approach on the east side but reveals itself through a large glazed facade and outdoor living areas at the river-facing side to the west. The strategic setup allows clients to enjoy beautiful views, from the Irshalgad hill fortress in the north to the sun setting over the river as it winds its way through the agricultural fields. Natural light pours through the mostly glazed facade fitted with galvanized steel mullioned windows.
