The 8-acre Grow Community is the largest planned solar community in Washington state, with ultra-efficient, net-zero energy homes, neighborhood gardens and green spaces, healthy transportation options and other sustainable features.
As the 7th endorsed One Planet Community in the world, the first in the United States and 5 star Built Green, Grow Community is setting a new national and international precedent for innovative development. The project combines private cottages, townhomes, and lofts available for purchase with rental flats and townhomes, with a total of 131 housing units on five (5) acres. Homes are clustered in ‘pocket neighborhoods’ around pea patches and outdoor gathering areas. Unique, sustainable and energy-efficient homes are built to ambitious green building standards. Energy and resource efficient houses are designed at a human scale, incorporating compact and livable design features to appeal to families, single residents and older people interested in downsizing.
The community offers intentional, intergenerational living and a new “aging in place” focus on accessibility. Located on Bainbridge Island, the community is just a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle. With beautifully designed solar-powered homes, shared community gardens and clean transportation options, Grow allows all generations to enjoy a high-quality and healthy lifestyle.
Developed by Asani, a company committed to creating sustainable neighborhoods, Grow Community is an intentional neighborhood designed for an inter-generational mix of residents with a range of floor plans ideal for families, young professionals and seniors. Grow Community is adjacent to Winslow town center and a short walk from the ferry terminal.
Three home models are representative of the homes in the first of a series of pocket neighborhoods that will make up Grow Community, powered entirely by renewable energy and designed to make a sustainable lifestyle easy and attainable for its residents. This first phase of Grow Community will be comprised of approximately 45 residences including single-family homes, attached homes and multifamily rentals. These homes will be spread throughout the development in clusters centered around shared green spaces and community gardens, connected by trails throughout the property.
“We are excited to see our vision take shape; a community designed intentionally for happier, healthier and more sustainable lifestyles,” says Marja Preston, President of Asani. “With the opening of our model homes we will be gathering feedback and continuing to involve the wider community as we launch the next stage of design.”
With the goal of making zero-carbon living both attainable and affordable, Asani has worked with local partners BlueFrog Solar and Itek Energy to provide an optional solar package for each of the homes, creating what could be the largest solar community in Washington state. Each home is designed to achieve net-zero energy consumption, with enough solar panels to provide sufficient energy to power the home.
PHC Construction of Bainbridge Island was honored with a 2014 Built Green Hammer award by the Master Builders Association for its work in the community.
The Grow design team adopted the One Planet Communities framework to guide the planning and development of the project. Based on the 10 principles of sustainability developed by BioRegional and The World Wildlife Fund (WWF), One Planet Living envisions communities in which people everywhere can enjoy a high quality of life within the productive capacity of the planet.
